JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Lifeguard

Reports to: Pool Manager, City Administrator

Age Requirement: Must be at least 15 years old

FLSA: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY

Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of visitors at the Hallock Pool. They will explain safety rules to patrons, warn them about unsafe situations and enforce pool rules and policies. Lifeguards play an instrumental role in maintaining order by inspecting swimming pool areas, locker rooms and restrooms.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Supervises swimming activities at the Hallock Pool and ensures all posted policies and safety procedures are followed.
  • Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies.
  • Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration if necessary.
  • Evaluates conditions for safety and initiates aquatics emergency action plan as required.
  • Inspects pool facilities, equipment and water to ensure they are safe.
  • Instructs or assists with swimming lessons.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Education and/or Experience

Required:  Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, American Red Cross CPR certification, American Red Cross First Aid certification, customer service skills, basic math and interpersonal skills.

Desired: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification.

Communication Skills

Ability to communicate effectively both orally, and in writing with staff, other public officials, volunteer departments and the general public.

Physical Demands

Employees are regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; use fingers; operate office equipment, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to stand, walk, balance and stoop. The employee must occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment

The majority of the time performing the duties of this job are spent outdoors, including in warmer and cooler weather. The employee will also occasionally be exposed to smells. The noise level in this environment is usually low.

 

Lifeguards hired by the City of Hallock will receive a reimbursement for the cost of their certification courses (Lifeguard, CPR and/or Water Safety Instructor courses). In addition, they are eligible for a swimsuit allowance, competitive wages and plenty of opportunities to work.
